Rescue Me ID: 17-01-03-00125Kingston (male)

Poodle    Age: Young Adult

Date into Rescue: 9/20/2016 Reason for being in rescue: Owner release/ Pca rescue. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? yes, Kingston is on Prozac for behavior problems and anxiety, Pepcid for a sensitive stomach and Zyrtec for food allergies. He is on a special diet, Taste of the Wild Rabbit. All together his medications run around $30 to $40 per month Weight: about 60 lbs Height: about 27' at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $229 Fence needed? Yes without question, Kingston needs the security of a fenced in yard to play. He is not a leash walk only kind of guy What kind of home would be best for me? ... (Read More)'Kingston needs an extremely experienced owner who can work with his anxieties and challenges and understand that much of the way he is was created by an abusive human. He will get better and better but he will always have a strong personality that needs understanding. What is my personality like? Kingston can be a lively and loving canine companion in the right home. He has no real preference male or female and I think would actually like a couple to live with. He could be an only dog although a very stable, strong standard poodle brother or sister that would be able to keep up with him and continue to teach him how to play the right way would work. Kingston likes other dogs but he does not know how to enjoy their company. Kingston is house trained and crate trained although the crate is not his favorite place. He pulls on a lead but can be walked nicely on a front lead harness. He absolutely loves toys and he will gather all his squeaky toys together on his bed. He can stay outside and watch the countryside go by him for hours. NO CATS!!!!! ABSOLUTELY NO KIDS UNDER 18 YEARS OLD Kingston was originally purchased as a puppy by a young woman in what she thought was a stable relationship but when Kingston was just a year old, the couple broke up and Kingston and his owner moved in with her parents. At the time he was a pretty happy pup with just a bit of a resource guarder showing . But....the owner's father did not like Kingston and banned him from the house shortly after they moved in. The owner moved Kingston from friend to friend trying to find a safe place for him and as he bounced and bounced, his behavior grew worse. A few months after, she moved in with a relative who was openly verbally abusive to both Kingston and his owner. The owner tried training and it was starting to work but she was not consistent with following through which confused Kingston even more. Her trainer observed the verbal abuse first hand. If there was physical abuse, it was never in front of anyone that we know of but the possibility exists. Eventually, the owner got back on track and moved into her own apartment but at that point, Kingston got little exercise and socialization. The owner worked long hours and Kingston was often crated 10+ hours and left alone. His behaviors (charging and biting at strangers) finally got to the point where the owner realized neither of them were happy and reached out to rescue. In his first day at the poodle farm, Kingston bit and drew blood on a caregiver who simply entered the room he was in. At that point, our director took him home and the first full morning he was with CPR, she took him to a vet where he was proscribed Prozac. The Prozac has been a tremendous help in curbing Kingston's anxieties and aggression. Kingston has not bit anyone else since that day. When Kingston is on his medication, he is fairly even tempered and able to be worked with. When Kingston is in a good mood, he is a joy to be around. He is playful and affectionate and will chase a ball, go for a walk or cuddle on the couch watching tv. He will always be a problem around strangers and will bark and snap at anyone coming in his house that he does not know. Once he knows you, he's much easier. He also meets strangers easier when he is outside his yard and on leash. There is much more to Kingston - more that makes more sense if he's met in person. If your interested in exploring giving a dog a home who truly needs a home, if you think you can handle the anxiety and can keep him on medication that is good for him, if your willing to work to find activities that he will enjoy and will help him gain confidence, if you don't have many visitors and your visitors are also dog savvy, he may be a good fit. It's a lot of 'if's' and we understand it won't be easy but out there somewhere is a home he can thrive in. We're going to be extremely careful in placing Kingston. How I act when I first meet new people: Apprehensive and afraid. It could take several meetings for Kingston to accept you. Other notes - Kingston does best with very short hair. His hair is oily. If it gets too long it does not look good at all. We keep him short overall including his ears. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are a (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-11-07-00254Romeo (male)

Poodle    Age: Senior

Date into Rescue:3/19/16 Reason for being in rescue: owner release Foster location: close to Waxhaw, NC Special Needs: no Weight: 15 pounds Height: 12 inches at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $ Fence needed? no What kind of home would be best for me? A quiet home, with older considerate children. Romeo would be a great companion to a couple who would like a pet that did not require a lot of exercise. What is my personality like? Romeo is very affectionate, very loving, seeks attention. He does like his space, and can be bossy to other pets that get into that space. But for the most part, he is a live and let live kind of guy. ... (Read More) How I act when I first meet new people: reserved, cautious but if feels comfortable, will seek attention. Oh....the well known tragic story of Romeo and Juliet came to be at a local shelter in the spring of 2016 with a few twist that only could happen to two precious pets. You see, Romeo and Juliet were surrendered at a local shelter and were running out of options. A plea went out for help for these two. Donna, her fabulous staff and supporters jumped into action to raise the funds to save these two from a tragic end. The shelter did not have any information on the pair, but it was obvious Romeo had cataracts and poor Juliet was expecting puppies and plus had an injured back leg. Estimated to be 10 years old, they needed help. We have had Romeo evaluated for cataracts and while one cataract is beyond surgery, we were very happy to know he still has 80% sight in his other eye. Romeo has had a total ear ablation, an expensive surgery to close an ear canal due to reoccurring ear infections...which means Romeo received excellent care at some time in his life. Romeo is a very affectionate and loving pet. The minute you pick him up, he will turn his body so he can place his paw around your neck and will snuggle his face against your neck. He will lay for hours while you rub and hold him. Romeo has the beauty of a miniature standard poodle, long legs and a beautiful 'poodle' stride. And while grooming is not his favorite thing, he tolerates it well and has a beautiful coat. Romeo can be a little bossy and enjoys his space. Since he is older, he enjoys going outside for a bit, but after a little exercise, he is ready to cuddle. He would make someone an excellent companion who wanted a pet that did not require a lot of exercise. Romeo does get excited and will bark to show his excitement. While Romeo's foster mom works, Romeo stays in a confined area of the home and will use pee pads. In his foster home, Romeo continues to enjoy spending time with Juliet, but Juliet has also been through several changes over the past several months. The puppies she was carrying when she came to Carolina Poodle Rescue did not live and once her injured leg was evaluated, it was decided it needed to be amputated. At the time time Juliet was spayed, she had several mammary tumors removed. Both surgeries were necessary, but were hard for this sweet girl. Juliet has fully recovered from the surgeries, but she has learned she likes her space and sometimes does not enjoy the companionship of Romeo. If you could open your home and heart to two precious pets, they would be a wonderful loving pair, but they do not have to be adopted together. There will be times Juliet will let Romeo know she was her space!! House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Rescue Me ID: 16-09-07-00393Walker (male)

Poodle    Age: Young Adult

Date into Rescue: 3/7/16 Reason for being in rescue: found as a stray Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? yes, Walker has tested positive for heartworms. When adopted, Walker will be sent home with a one year supply of heartworm preventative. Weight: est 12 lbs Height: est 12' at the shoulder Adoption fee: $229 Fence needed? no What kind of home would be best for me? Walker would thrive best in a home with an experienced owner that can continue to work and train with him on his socialization skills. Walker would greatly benefit from an adopter that will continue to expose him to new experiences and positive ... (Read More)interactions with the world. What is my personality like? Walker was a strange bird when he first came to us here at CPR. He was very tense and jumpy and sometimes hard to get a read on. However, Walker has since made many strides since his first days with us. At first, he was rotated outside by himself, but now he lives in a cottage with about fifteen other dogs. He seems much more comfortable with human touch and all of our caregivers are able to handle and pick him up. The biggest issue with Walker is that if he doesn't want to do something and you try to make him he is going to throw a temper tantrum, which now mainly seems to be grooming. He does not like to be groomed and is currently sedation groomed. However, we feel once he is in a home with one person that person could train with him and desensitize him to the process of grooming. Walker is a very energetic boy and can go all day. He loves to run, jump, and play outside. He also likes to play with toys and tennis balls. Walker gets along well with most dogs, but his high energy level irritates some dogs. How I act when I first meet new people: Walker is a little shy with new people, but comes around quickly. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: 5 years Please note - we do not ship dogs. Rescue Me ID: 16-09-07-00243Jasper (male)

Poodle    Age: Adult

Date into Rescue: 04/09/2016 Reason for being in rescue: found as a stray Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? early age cataracts that don't currently affect his vision Weight: 25 lbs Height: about 13 inches at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $169 Fence needed? no What kind of home would be best for me? Jasper is looking for a happy home, and one where he can be a big part of your life. He loves people. What is my personality like? When Jasper first came to us at the farm, he was timid around people and other dogs. He would cower at loud noises and fast movements. He was just a little unsure of himself. ... (Read More)With each day that passes, Jasper continues to blossom into a more confident and assured dog. He has made some furry friends here, and gets along nicely with other dogs. Jasper likes to go out on leash walks to explore and we are currently working on his leash training. Update: Jasper was evaluated 7/26/2016 by a veterinary ophthalmologist. He has early age related cataracts in both eyees but neither diminish his vision much at this point. The ophthamologist says recheck in 4 to 5 years. At the vet visit, our doctor did determine is a bit older than we were led to believe. Jasper is not defined by his age one bit. He is full of energy and goofy! He loves to walk outside but still needs some leash work. He is perfectly fine with most dogs but I would suggest a meeting of dogs if Jasper is a considered candidate for your home. He loves attention and will thank you with kisses. Jasper is a absolute fool for treats, use it to your advantage on winning him over! He can be bashful with new people, but with a handful of treats he will begin to come around. He now knows how to sit and will be easily trainable for basic commands. Jasper has improved so much since he first got here.. He is no longer the scared little poodle in the corner, he is the confident one wagging his tail to everyone he comes in contact with at the farm! How I act when I first meet new people: Jasper can be bashful, but he is friendly to new people. He absolutely loves riding in the car. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: our initial best guess of birthday is 4/1/2006 but after an evaluation by an ophthalmology surgeon, we now believe Jasper is at least 11 - but don't let it fool ya! Rescue Me ID: 16-08-11-00125Carlton (male)

Poodle    Age: Adult

Date into Rescue: 11/12/2015 Reason for being in rescue: found as a stray Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Carlton is a bit of a touch me not at this point, human hands make him nervous but since he moves around very nicely on his own, we're using cues to direct him without having to have those scary hands lift him. Carlton has an occasional episode that resembles a seizure - every few months. It is not enough to make him have to go on medication. In fact, remarkably, dramamine will often draw him out. We're puzzled at the cause but it does not affect his quality of life. Weight: about 10 lbs Height: ... (Read More)about 9 inches at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $169 Fence needed? No What kind of home would be best for me? A quiet home where everyone takes their time and is kind and gentle. Carlton is a quiet, kind and gentle kind of guy. What is my personality like? Sweet, a bit shy and a little afraid things might hurt him. As he has gotten more comfortable and confident, he's doing better with timidity. He will never be a social butterfly but he has the potential to make a quiet person an excellent pet. Carlton is an omega dog - dogs that are the least bit dominant pick on Carlton and while he will defend himself, that just makes it worse and often times instead of defending, he screams and that makes more dominant dogs even more determined to get at him. He is doing very well in his play group with laid back, non dominant dogs. He would most likely do best as an only dog or with a very laid back, happy dog friend who will share and share alike. We have had Carlton for several months trying to figure out his behavior. Carlton has had 3 seizures in 5 months. They are well spaced out and are not full blown seizures. So far there is not the need for medication. He may never have another one - but we want everyone interested to know. Carlton loves food! It makes him leap for joy - literally. Watching this little guy jump 2 feet in the air for a cookie and get so excited and happy is a real treat. How I act when I first meet new people: A little timid but he warms up. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Rescue Me ID: 16-08-01-00372Whitley (female)

Poodle    Age: Adult

All about me! Name: Whitley Breed: standard poodle Age: 8 years; birthdate 07/25/08 Height: est 22 inches Weight: about 54lbs Good with dogs? yes Good with men? loves 'em Good with women? loves 'em House trained? yes Crate trained? yes Leash trained? yes Must have fenced in yard? yes Foster home is: Dreamweaver Farms Pacolet SC Adoption fee: $200.00 Why am I with a rescue group? Whitley's family recently adopted a handsome little guy with special needs, and simply didn't feel like they could give Whitley the time and attention she deserved. It was a difficult decision and not made lightly, and this is one terrific dog as a result. Whitley ... (Read More)is gorgeous in color, orange/gold to me but technically 'red' in the world of poodles. A face with white markings she reminds me of a creamcicle pop! A gorgeous tail, not full, but slightly longer than the average poodle. This dog has had time spent training her as she knows sit, down, roll-over, shake, and stay. And probably much more, that was simply all I tried on our first 'date' (assessment). She pulled on the leash and might benefit more from a harness, but again, this was only our first time out and it might be all the smells and bells were too much for her to remember all her best behaviors. Update as of February 2016: Whitley was adopted from CPR years ago and unfortunately has now returned due to some behavioral issues. Her family has reported that Whitley has shown aggression when being asked to do something she didn't want to do and aggression over food. Since she has been with us here she has shown aggression toward both the mop and the broom, and she does resource guard her food. Due to her resource guarding issues we feel she would fit best in a home without children. Whitley needs a home with a dog savvy person, someone confident in their dog handling skills, because Ms. Whitley is going to push the envelope and see what she can and cannot get away with. Once she is made aware that that behavior is unacceptable and wasn't going to be tolerated, she behaves like the good dog we know she can be. Please note - we do not ship dogs. Rescue Me ID: 15-10-11-00282Buckles of Sweetwater (female)

Poodle Mix    Age: Young Adult

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Date into Rescue: 08/01/2015 Reason for being in rescue: owner turn into shelter Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Yes - Diabetes Insipidus Weight: 13 lbs Height: est 13' Adoption Fee: I'm special Fence needed? Yes - Buckles is very active and loves to run. What does Diabetes Insipidus mean? Buckles drinks water - all day - and urinates frequently as a result. This is a rare form of diabetes that is caused by a deficiency of the pituitary hormone (vasopressin) which regulates kidney function. This disorder is very uncommon and is not curable. Buckles is currently on a hormone-replacement medication (given ... (Read More)through eye drops). It is helping a little but we do not know that this is going to be her permanent cure. We are working with her to find out what works best. What is my personality like? Buckles is spunky, friendly and loving. She is energetic and must have a fenced in yard to run in. She gets along with other dogs and cats - and would be a great playmate to another dog her size or larger. Buckles is eager to please and bonds quickly. Buckles does have a 'house training' issue only because of her condition. For someone who is retired and is home all the time, her house training isn't much of a problem. She must be taken outside every two hours, and her house training is basically controlled. Buckles cannot be deprived of water as it can be fatal to her. How I act when I first meet new people: House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: est birthdate 2.2.2013 Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, color, age, etc. Others here may be a better fit for you. Rescue Me ID: 14-10-18-00454Sherlock (male)

Poodle Mix    Age: Adult

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Meet Sherlock! Breed: Shep a doodle - old english sheepdog and standard poodle mix Gender: male Date into Rescue: 7/31/14 Reason for being in rescue: Owner release, can't handle Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? YES -Behavior Weight: Est 50 lbs Height: Est 25 ' Adoption fee: $329 Age: birthdater 10/6/2009 (Please understand that these are rescued dogs, and sometimes their ages are only a guess. We go with what we are told) What is my personality like? Sherlock's sad past history of shock-collar training (since he was a year old until he came to us, Sherlock wore an electric shock training collar at ... (Read More)all times) makes me cry every time I think of it. This is abuse plain and simple - to be continually shocked for the slightest transgression would drive me crazy too. Sherlock developed some bad, and quite frankly, sad, habits. After being assessed by a trainer, we believe it will take a very long time - possibly years to undo the damage that has been done to this guy. He is very strong on a leash but will walk alongside you, especially when he is wearing a harness. Sherlock is a bright dog with many skills. Cues he knows include : sit, wait (stay), up (stand up from laying down), down (to lay down), leave-it (walk away from whatever it is he's smelling, eating, doing etc.), kennel (go to his kennel), heel, here (his recall/come). There are a few other commands that he knew like 'place' and 'look sharp' but the previous owner did not reinforce these commands. Sherlock does have some resource guarding tendencies, especially inside of his crate over his food bowl. This is most evident when other dogs approach him. Our caregiver can now put his bowl in and take it out of the crate with no issues. This is a huge improvement from when he first came here. Also, according to what his previous owner witnessed with him, he does not like to be approached while he is lying down. He will growl, show teeth and or bite. We have not seen this at the farm, however farm-life and home-life are two different things, and he may resort to this behavior again once he is back in a home. Also according to his behavior with his previous owner, he could not be bathed or groomed without a muzzle. At first, we were able to do both without a muzzle here, but again he is out of his comfort zone, and sometimes dog's do not show their 'true nature' until they are comfortable. A few months into his stay with CPR, he did get wild during grooming and we chose to get him shaved down under sedation but we're going to try again. We have had two bite incidents at the farm with Sherlock. In both cases, Sherlock warned the caregiver repeatedly and the warning one time was ignored and the second time, Sherlock had a rag wrapped around his foot and it was cutting off circulation. Our caregiver was a new one and did not know he had time to call for help so he tried to remove the rag himself. It was painful and Sherlock snapped at him In both cases, the bite broke skin but did not require stitches or a doctor's visit. On a positive note, Sherlock is a happy, affectionate dog. There is much more to him than some bad habits, he loves attention and he loves to be petted. Sherlock is house and crate trained, and is VERY well mannered indoors. He really is a sweet dog who could make someone a wonderful companion, if you are are strong dog leader who understands this dog must always be closely monitored and whose energy must be drawn to positive activities. He loves to run and would make a great jogging or hiking companion. Who I am seeking: Because of his behavior, we understand Sherlock may be with for the rest of his life so he is available for virtual adoption and is seeking sponsors to help us afford to care for him. If you hate shocking dogs as much as I do, then consider Sherlock as your virtually adoptable favorite guy. Thinking you can handle him - we have requirements for Sherlock. He must be adopted by someone who is a very experienced dog-owner. Preferably someone who has experience with the breed and with the behaviors that we are describing. He must be an only dog - other animals overwhelm him and spark some of these bad habits of his. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture, and not to discriminate against older dogs. You never know which dog will steal your heart when you meet them! Please note - we do not ship dogs.
